When I drove away from my house in Houston, it was 4th of July weekend, 2007. I was moving to Brooklyn, NY after five years of wanting to and my brother was helping me drive the 26 foot, yellow Penske truck halfway across the U.S. The three day trip took us through Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, the Carolinas and those little states along the 95...North. Both of us had visited New York before, but not this way, driving the East Coast.

After three days of traveling, we finally reached the New Jersey Turnpike, a variation of Beltway 8 around Houston or the 610 Loop. The trip was enjoyable. My brother and I talked about "your momma" and life in general. It was a time of bonding that we had never really had since he's 10 years older than me.

The point of this recollection is that it was and is for me an ultimate act of faith. See, what I didn't say is that up until the day I left, I didn't have the money to rent the truck, but a friend, Stafney told me to take an act of faith. She said, "Go to the ATM, put your card in the machine and punch in the amount of money you need and watch it come out." I did exactly that. Three hundred dollars came out of the machine. You can call it overdraft protection, but I called it faith...and no I didn't steal the money, but I don't remember having that money in my account.
Also, I need to point out that when my brother and I drove away from my house, it was not rented. I left the keys with the realtor and my brother and I pulled onto Beltway 8 headed for I-10 east. That too was an act of faith because I know that I didn't have the money to pay my mortgage and pay rent, a security deposit and a broker's fee for my new apartment in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Somehow it worked out and that again is called faith.

What these two situations have in common was that I didn't know what was ahead, but somehow, I was at peace with not knowing. I didn't know how or when, but I knew, and that was what was most important. To me, that's the definition of faith.

What acts of faith have you exercised lately or in the past? Please share.
